NHS Band 9 Pay 2026/27: Salary, Hourly Rates and Roles

Last updated: 26 September 2026 · Figures verified against the NHS Employers 2026/27 pay circular.

All figures below are the confirmed 2026/27 Agenda for Change pay award for England (3.3% uplift, effective 1 April 2026), verified against the NHS Employers pay circular. For context on the structure behind the bands, see how the banding system works and how Agenda for Change bands work.

NHS Band 9 pay table 2026/27

Pay stepAnnual salary (FTE)Hourly rate
Entry£112,782£57.62
Intermediate£119,583£61.09
Top of band£129,783£66.30

Hourly rates are calculated as annual salary ÷ 52.2 weeks ÷ 37.5 hours, the standard NHS divisor. All figures are full-time equivalent; part-time staff are paid pro rata. For comparison, the 2025/26 Band 9 range was £107,537–£125,637.

What is NHS Band 9?

Band 9 is the highest band in the Agenda for Change pay system, which covers all directly employed NHS staff in England except doctors, dentists and the most senior managers on separate contracts. Reaching Band 9 means holding one of the most senior posts in a trust or integrated care board.

Typical Band 9 posts include directors of nursing, finance directors, directors of operations, and consultant-level clinical leaders in highly specialist fields. These are board-level or near-board-level roles carrying organisation-wide responsibility: large budgets, hundreds or thousands of staff, and accountability for clinical quality and financial performance. There are relatively few Band 9 posts in any trust, and appointments are made through open competition rather than internal promotion ladders.

How progression from Band 8d to Band 9 works

Unlike movement between the pay steps within a band, moving from Band 8d to Band 9 is not automatic and is not linked to length of service. Agenda for Change allocates every post to a band through a national job evaluation scheme, so a Band 8d employee only moves to Band 9 by successfully applying for a Band 9 post.

In practice this means:

  • There is no waiting list. Years served at the top of NHS Band 8d pay (£108,814 in 2026/27) do not entitle anyone to Band 9.
  • The jump is substantial. The Band 9 entry point (£112,782) sits just above the Band 8d maximum, but the Band 9 top (£129,783) is nearly £21,000 higher — the largest single-band range in the system.
  • Competition is national. Band 9 vacancies are advertised openly and attract candidates from across the NHS and sometimes beyond it.

Staff considering the move typically build experience at Band 8c salaries/8d level in operational leadership, strategy or specialist clinical practice before applying.

Pension contributions at Band 9

Every Band 9 salary point falls in the top NHS pension contribution tiers: 12.5% of pensionable pay (England and Wales, 2025/26 tiers; 2026/27 thresholds are yet to be officially published but the top tier is unchanged in structure). Pensionable pay includes basic salary plus any High Cost Area Supplement and qualifying overtime or unsocial-hours payments.

Two things senior staff should know:

  • The employer contributes 23.7% of pensionable pay on top — one of the most generous employer contributions available in the UK, and a major part of total reward at this level.
  • Annual allowance tax charges can affect high earners whose pension growth exceeds the annual allowance in a given year. This is a personal tax matter; affected staff should take independent financial advice rather than relying on general guidance.

Tax and take-home notes

Band 9 salaries sit well into the higher-rate income tax band, and the top of the band approaches the additional-rate threshold. Actual take-home pay depends on tax code, student loan deductions, pension contributions and any salary-sacrifice arrangements. Use the NHS pay calculator on our homepage to model take-home pay for a specific Band 9 salary point, and check current HMRC thresholds for the tax year in question.

Overtime, unsocial hours and TOIL at Band 9

Under Section 3 of the Agenda for Change handbook, Bands 8 and 9 have no contractual right to overtime pay. Extra hours are compensated with time off in lieu (TOIL), subject to local agreement — there is no automatic time-and-a-half or double-time payment as there is for Bands 1–7.

Unsocial hours enhancements under Section 2 can still apply when Band 9 staff work qualifying unsocial hours (weekday nights 8pm–6am, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays): time plus 30% for nights and Saturdays, and time plus 60% for Sundays and bank holidays. In practice, most Band 9 roles are Monday-to-Friday senior leadership posts, so these enhancements rarely feature.

High Cost Area Supplement at Band 9

Staff in London and the fringe receive HCAS on top of basic salary in 2026/27. Note the High Cost Area Supplement rates and their maximum caps: inner London 20% (minimum £5,794, maximum £8,746), outer London 15% (£4,870–£6,137), fringe 5% (£1,346–£2,270). At Band 9 salaries, 20% of basic pay would exceed the £8,746 inner-London cap, so senior London staff receive the capped cash amount rather than the full percentage.

How Scotland's pay award differs: the devolved nations set their own awards, so these England figures do not apply north of the border.
