UK Nurse Salary in Rupees: NHS Band 5–7 Pay in INR (2026/27)

Last updated: 28 September 2026 · Figures verified against the NHS Employers 2026/27 pay circular.

Start from the pound figure, not the rupee figure

Every figure on this page is a conversion of the official NHS Agenda for Change pay scales for England in 2026/27, which rose 3.3% from 1 April 2026. Your NHS contract pays you in pounds, into a UK bank account, and your rent, food and transport are all priced in pounds. The rupee figure is useful for planning — comparing the move with what you earn now, estimating remittances, or explaining the opportunity to family — but it is the pound salary that is fixed. For the underlying pound figures and how the bands work, see NHS Band 5 pay, Band 6 pay and Band 7 pay.

The conversion rate used on this page: £1 ≈ ₹127 — the approximate market rate on 27 September 2026. The September 2026 monthly average was about ₹128.3. Exchange rates move every day with currency markets, and the rate your bank actually gives you for a transfer will differ slightly because of margins and fees. All rupee figures below are labelled approximate for exactly this reason.

Two cautions before the tables. First, these are full-time equivalent salaries for a 37.5-hour week in England; part-time contracts are pro rata, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own scales (see NHS Scotland pay and NHS Wales pay). Second, they are gross — before UK income tax, National Insurance, NHS pension contributions and any student loan deductions. Take-home pay is lower; our pay band overview explains how deductions work in principle.

Band 5 in rupees — the newly qualified nurse salary

Most international nurses arrive as Band 5 staff nurses once they hold NMC registration (many trusts employ arrivals as Band 4 pre-registration nurses while they prepare for the OSCE — see our guide to the NMC registration cost). Band 5 in England has three pay steps, and at ₹127 to the pound they convert as follows:

Band 5 pay step (2026/27)Annual (£)Approx annual (₹)Approx monthly (₹)
Entry (under 2 years)£32,073≈ ₹40.7 lakh≈ ₹3.39 lakh
Intermediate (2+ years)£34,592≈ ₹43.9 lakh≈ ₹3.66 lakh
Top of band (5+ years)£39,043≈ ₹49.6 lakh≈ ₹4.13 lakh

Put simply: a newly qualified nurse's starting salary is worth roughly ₹40.7 lakh a year, or about ₹3.39 lakh a month, at late-September 2026 rates. Reaching the top of Band 5 after around five years' experience is worth roughly ₹49.6 lakh a year. Unsocial-hours enhancements — +30% for Saturday and weekday night shifts, +60% for Sundays and bank holidays for Bands 4–9 — add to this for anyone working a realistic rota; see NHS unsocial hours and overtime rates for worked examples.

Band 6 in rupees — senior staff nurse / specialist nurse

Band 6 covers senior staff nurses, junior sisters and charge nurses, and specialist practitioners. With two to three further pay steps, the rupee equivalents step up materially:

Band 6 pay step (2026/27)Annual (£)Approx annual (₹)Approx monthly (₹)
Entry (under 2 years)£39,959≈ ₹50.7 lakh≈ ₹4.23 lakh
Intermediate (2+ years)£42,170≈ ₹53.6 lakh≈ ₹4.46 lakh
Top of band (5+ years)£48,117≈ ₹61.1 lakh≈ ₹5.09 lakh

The jump from the top of Band 5 to the entry of Band 6 is about ₹1.1 lakh a year at this exchange rate, and the Band 6 ceiling is roughly ₹61.1 lakh. Many internationally recruited nurses reach Band 6 within a few years of UK practice, often through a junior sister or specialist post — progression is by appointment to a higher-banded post, not automatic with service.

Band 7 in rupees — ward manager / advanced roles

Band 7 is the ward manager, senior specialist and advanced practitioner band, and the first level at which many nurses take genuine management responsibility:

Band 7 pay step (2026/27)Annual (£)Approx annual (₹)Approx monthly (₹)
Entry (under 2 years)£49,387≈ ₹62.7 lakh≈ ₹5.23 lakh
Intermediate (2+ years)£51,932≈ ₹66.0 lakh≈ ₹5.50 lakh
Top of band (5+ years)£56,515≈ ₹71.8 lakh≈ ₹5.98 lakh

A Band 7 at entry is worth roughly ₹62.7 lakh a year, rising to about ₹71.8 lakh at the top of the band. For context on what these roles involve, see our guides to ward manager salary and clinical nurse specialist salary.

Worked examples in INR

Example 1 — newly qualified nurse, first NHS post. Priya arrives from India, passes her OSCE and starts as a Band 5 staff nurse in Manchester. Basic pay: £32,073 ≈ ₹40.7 lakh a year (₹3.39 lakh a month). She works a typical rota including nights and weekends, so unsocial-hours enhancements add a meaningful top-up on top of basic — the exact amount depends on her actual shifts.

Example 2 — experienced nurse, Band 6 specialist post after four years. Arjun is appointed to a Band 6 junior sister post at £42,170 ≈ ₹53.6 lakh a year (₹4.46 lakh a month), before enhancements and any London weighting.

Example 3 — Band 7 ward manager in outer London. Meera earns £49,387 basic plus 15% outer London HCAS (within the £4,870–£6,137 range for 2026/27), giving roughly £56,795 ≈ ₹72.1 lakh a year. London weighting is real money — see NHS London weighting (HCAS) — but it exists because London costs more.

To plan remittances realistically, work from the pound take-home after tax, National Insurance and pension, then convert. A rough rule of thumb used by many migrant nurses is to budget in pounds for the UK and convert only the surplus they intend to send home.

The reality check: a UK cost of living

Rupee figures flatter the salary because UK prices are also in pounds. Rent, council tax, utilities, transport and food are all paid from the same pound salary, and London and the South East cost substantially more than most other regions — which is why London weighting exists. Two honest planning points:

  • Tax and deductions are real. UK income tax, National Insurance and NHS pension contributions (Band 5 salaries sit around the 8.3%–9.8% pension tiers; see NHS pension contributions) come off before you see the money. Do not budget from the gross rupee figure.
  • First-year costs are front-loaded. NMC registration costs (around £1,170 in fees — see our NMC cost guide), the visa process and setting up a home all land in year one. Many trusts offer a relocation package for overseas nurses that reimburses some of these — check the job advert, because there is no single national package.

None of this diminishes the opportunity: a Band 5 salary is a solid professional income by UK standards, with annual uplifts, unsocial-hours enhancements, 27+ days of leave and one of the best pensions in the country. It is simply worth planning in pounds.

Rate used: £1 ≈ ₹127 (approximate market rate, 27 September 2026; September 2026 monthly average ≈ ₹128.3). Exchange rates move daily — re-check before making decisions, and note your bank's transfer rate will differ slightly.

Exchange-rate risk across a three-year contract

The £1 ≈ ₹127 conversion used on this page is a snapshot dated 27 September 2026, and it will move. Your NHS salary is fixed in pounds by Agenda for Change — the 3.3% uplift from 1 April 2026 is a sterling figure — so the rupee value of your pay floats with the market for the whole of your contract. In practical terms, the amount your family receives from a fixed monthly remittance can vary noticeably from month to month even though your payslip never changes.

Three habits protect you from that volatility. First, budget in pounds for your UK life — rent, bills and living costs are all sterling — and treat the remittance as the variable, not the other way round. Second, when comparing a UK offer with options at home or in the Gulf, convert at a conservative rate and over the full contract length, remembering that each April's AfC pay award moves the sterling figure. Third, price the transfer itself: banks and transfer services take their own margin on the exchange rate, so the rate you see quoted is rarely the rate your family receives. None of this changes the underlying pay — Band 5 pays what it pays — but it stops the exchange rate quietly rewriting your plans.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a UK nurse salary in rupees?

At late-September 2026 rates (about ₹127 to the pound), an NHS Band 5 nurse earns roughly ₹40.7–₹49.6 lakh a year, Band 6 roughly ₹50.7–₹61.1 lakh, and Band 7 roughly ₹62.7–₹71.8 lakh — gross, full-time, before UK tax and deductions. Exchange rates move daily, so these are estimates.

What is the starting salary of a nurse in the UK in rupees?

A newly qualified nurse starts at the bottom of Band 5: £32,073 in 2026/27, which is approximately ₹40.7 lakh a year or ₹3.39 lakh a month at ₹127/£. International nurses often start on Band 4 pre-registration pay (£28,392–£31,157, roughly ₹36.1–₹39.6 lakh) while preparing for the OSCE.

Which exchange rate is used for these conversions?

Approximately ₹127 to £1, the market rate on 27 September 2026 (the September 2026 monthly average was about ₹128.3). The rate moves daily and your bank's transfer rate will include a margin, so use these figures for planning, not for exact budgeting.

Is the rupee figure before or after tax?

Before tax. All figures are gross UK salaries. UK income tax, National Insurance, NHS pension contributions and any student loan repayments are deducted before pay reaches your account. Budget from the pound take-home, then convert any surplus you plan to send home.

Do NHS nurses get extra pay on top of the basic salary?

Yes. Unsocial-hours enhancements add 30% for Saturday and weekday night shifts and 60% for Sundays and bank holidays (Bands 4–9), overtime is time-and-a-half above 37.5 hours a week, and London posts attract High Cost Area Supplement. These are paid in pounds on top of the basic salary converted above.

How much can a nurse save and send home each month?

It depends entirely on where you live and how you live — London rents absorb far more than rents in most other regions. Rather than a single figure, plan in pounds: subtract tax, pension, rent, bills and living costs from take-home pay, and convert only the genuine surplus. Do not budget remittances from the gross rupee figure.

Does the salary change in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?

Yes — each nation sets its own Agenda for Change award. In 2026/27 Scotland awarded 3.75% on its own scale (Band 5 £34,494–£42,977), Wales awarded 3.3%, and Northern Ireland's 3.3% recommendation had not been implemented at the time of writing. The figures on this page are for England.
